The beginnings of ‘The Resigned’ were a rather strange affair, with the band being very stop-start for the majority of the first year of their existence. Officially the band first formed at the beginning of 2006, and was developed from a former musical project which included Adam Beckley and Luke Bowers on guitar. When that band ended, the two guitarists continued to write music together and carry on the band, but rather than trying to find a singer, they decided to try doing vocals and writing lyrics themselves.
Having been asked to play a gig at the end of January 2006 they needed to find a drummer and bassist. This is how Elliott Hughes first joined the band as he shared a mutual friend with Adam Beckley, and so was asked to fill the drummers spot. Although at the time Elliott was already playing for two other bands, and with being in college at the time could not commit to being in a 3rd band full time as well, although agreed to play whenever he could, This led to several months where the band didn’t even see each other. Indeed the band only played two “one-off” gigs during this time, and wasn’t until late 2006 they were anything like a “normal” band.
The line up of the band, then called ‘Warnings and Promises’ was completed by the joining of bass player Heather Duffy. Drawing on inspiration from bands like Fugazi and The Pixies, they began rehearsing for that first gig on January 30th 2006. This was closely followed by a 2nd gig in February, and then the band was put on a temporary break while Elliott continued his work with other projects.
Come September of that year and the completion of both Elliott’s college course, and the breakup of the two other bands he was working with, he turned his attention to the band full time. This was the first time the band had really had chance to work together properly on ideas with no pressure of upcoming shows to work to, and where they could start to work more on their sound, and what they wanted to do as a band. This led to their first very rough recording in November, and the start of playing gigs again.
